New Coach Hired

With the departure of Coach Baldwin to take over at Miller High School as Head Coach, we were in desperate need to find a coach with the same experience and quality as we lost. I believe we found that in Jared Schoonover. Jared comes to Neosho from Bentonville High School in Bentonville, AR, and brings a great wealth of knowledge and experience to our program. He will be coaching the receivers and I will take over the QB's. Jared and his wife Lindy have a nearly 2 year old daughter and welcomed their second daughter this past Wednesday. We are excited to have them in Neosho and part of the Wildcat Football Family.

Midnight Madness

We had our first Midnight Madness session and I believe it was a success for our maiden voyage. After a brief warm-up, we did some balance drills that Coach Perkins had borrowed from Coach Sherman formerly of Platte County. We would stand on one leg, move in different directions, and then did it with their eyes closed: That was a whole new wrinkle for them!

Afterward we went into the weight room and worked on competition and trust by doing some blindfold bench press, an idea brought in by Coach Warren (I apologize for not getting video of tonight; I will get it the next time). They formed groups of three and one man would blind fold himself and lie down on the bench. The other two would put weight--an unknown amount to the blindfolded man--on the bar and tell him how many times to lift it. There were many guys that lifted their current max for 2 or even 3 reps! They had no idea how much weight was on the bar so they were forced to compete against their own mental notions and lift the bar. They also had to trust their partners not to put on a ridiculous amount of weight. It was great to see the kids break through mental barriers.

When we finished that, we sat in a circle and each player and coach answered the question: "What is your favorite childhood memory?" Each kid gave a piece of himself to the team and we learned a great deal about each other. We grew as a team a became more of a unit. It was exciting to see all the different cultures and backgrounds in the room and each kids attentively listening to the next.

When we finished, the kids were able to enjoy some iced down Powerade courtesy of the Rainwater Family. That is a wonderful gesture that is much appreciated.

Keep checking back for updates and information.

Tire Club

We had our first Tire Club meeting on Thursday the 19th. The players said there were more there than at any time last year. That is a good sign of things to come. The kids work extremely hard and this workout adds another variety to our regime. I am proud of the work ethic so far. I am looking forward to the summer when we can have all of our kids together for the first time working towards a common goal. Check out the video to see what they did, the sweat they lost, and the dirt they accumulated!

Stick Fighting

As a staff, we are trying to make everything we do more competitive to make our program more competitive. Stick Fighting was an idea Coach Warren implemented with the help of Mr. Sandford and his Industrial Arts Class. The premise is simple: two men grab onto a stick and one must come away with it. They must stay inside the circle and three seconds out of it eliminates them. The best man is victorious with the stick in his hand! Check out the video!

Life as a Wildcat

There are a few principles that come to mind when I think about what I want out of my players. They are simple and easy to do and are found in those that possess great discipline. I believe a I can sum it up on one statement:

Be a good person!

This includes being a good son or brother. Respect your parents and what they do for you. They provide a great deal for you and commit a great deal of time and energy for you and your success.

Be a good student. Respect your teachers and the fact that they are sorely underpaid to put up with your nonsense day in and day out. Don't give them problems in class, do your work, and do it to the best of your ability. You have to try hard to make an F in high school.

Be a good citizen. Help in your community by volunteering your time and energy to others. It is a great feeling to accomplish something for someone else when you don't stand to benefit from it.

Be a good friend. Find those you trust and give them your trust and don't do anything to jeopardize that. Good friends are hard to come by in this world and you have the potential to have 60 of them on this team.

As the head coach, I will always have higher expectations of my players than of the average student. I expect my own children to behave better and try harder than other students, I expect my "football kids" to do the same thing.

Remember who you are and represent the N!
